Improv Level 1
Welcome to improv! Here’s where to start.
This class is designed for absolute beginners up to those with some short form or long form improv experience. Each week we will develop your group and individual skills through scene work and exercises.
This course is an introduction to long-form improvisation, based on the style developed by The iO Theater and The Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre. We will start with a focus on the fundamentals - agreement, listening, and support - as well as the thing that should come across in every scene: the FUN! We will also get into technical improv skills like establishing the reality of the scene, connecting with your scene partner, and playing with emotion.
Class ends in an optional graduation show.

Joke Writing Workshop with Michael Busch
This workshop focuses on exercises to generate new material, joke writing structure, and practical ways to punch up your writing!

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:
Michael Busch
Originally from Mentor, Ohio, Michael brings over 15 years of experience in the Los Angeles entertainment industry and live comedy scene back to Cleveland to help support and build the vibrant local community. He is a graduate of the IO improv program and has studied at UCB with founders Matt Walsh and Matt Besser, among others. He was on house improv teams at both IO West and UCB, and a sketch house team at UCB. He has written and produced sketches and web series for places such as FunnyorDie, CollegeHumor, AwesomenessTV, and Defy Media. His acting credits include Conan, The Goldbergs, Pretty Little Liars, and Human Giant.
Michael is the founder and Artistic Director of Imposters Theater.

Rough Draft: Sketch Open Mic
An hour dedicated to testing written comedic material. Whether you’re part of an existing sketch group or dipping your toes in the sketch water this is the place for you to try out new work.
How it works: You can submit as a group or as an individual writer for a 10 minute slot. If you’re a writer, we will find actors for you to read your scripts. Sketches can be presented as stage readings or fully blocked and costumed pieces. Booked acts will receive the run order the week of the show.
How to submit: Fill out this form with your group/individual name, the date you are interested in, and your scripts. All material will be accepted but I am screening for basic crimes against humanity, don’t be a jerk.
For Actors: If you’re interested in reading material, please feel free to submit your availability for upcoming show dates.

Sketch Battle: Tournament of Champions
Three sketch comedy troupes are given three prompts to inspire three sketches. They’ll have two months to write and prepare to compete in the blood-stained arena of comedy combat.
You, the audience, will decide which group lives and which group… also lives but does not move on to the tournament of champions.
The winning troupe will receive bragging rights and the opportunity to defend their hard won title of Sketch Battle champion.

Listen to fascinating Ted Talks as you’ve never heard them before - and neither have the performers. Four improvisers will present PowerPoints that they have never seen before in the style of various funny characters and unhinged experts.
Audience members will then have the opportunity to ask these characters about their presentation and even their character lives after each presentation.
CLEVELAND’S COMEDY COURT
We take the audience's problems and put them on trial.
A group of improvisers get someone's problem, and then put that problem on trial with fake attorneys and witnesses for both sides. Guided by a real fake judge to keep things somewhat on the rails.

Description:
All of us have so many stories inside ourselves — ones that will make people lean in, laugh, or quietly nod because they see themselves in our words. In this four-week class, you’ll learn how to turn real moments from your life into powerful, authentic stories for the stage — just like you hear on The Moth or see at local storytelling shows.
Through weekly guided exercises, feedback, and supportive coaching, you’ll discover:
• How to find the story beneath the story — the emotional truth that connects you and your audience.
• Techniques for structure and pacing that make your story come alive.
• How to use your natural voice, presence, and vulnerability to both feel comfortable and connect with the audience.
• Ways to polish your story for performance or just for personal reflection.
For our fourth and final class, you’ll share one fully developed 5-7 minute story at our class showcase.

About the Instructor:
Deena Nyer Mendlowitz has been performing and teaching improv for over 15 years. She trained at The Second City Cleveland and at both The Second City and Annoyance Theater in Chicago. Deena is the creator of This Improvised Life, a part improvised, part written story-telling hour, and Mental Illness and Friends!, a live comedy talk show. She is also the co-founder of Mass Hysteria Improv Comedy Fest, a comedy fest run by women, for everyone. Deena was recently named one of Ohio's funniest women by Cleveland.com and was also honored as a CJN Difference Maker for the work she has done using comedy to promote mental health awareness and to destigmatize mental illness.

Improv Level 1
Welcome to improv! Here’s where to start.
This class is designed for absolute beginners up to those with some short form or long form improv experience. Each week we will develop your group and individual skills through scene work and exercises.
This course is an introduction to long-form improvisation, based on the style developed by The iO Theater and The Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre. We will start with a focus on the fundamentals - agreement, listening, and support - as well as the thing that should come across in every scene: the FUN! We will also get into technical improv skills like establishing the reality of the scene, connecting with your scene partner, and playing with emotion.
Class ends in an optional graduation show.

Learn techniques to write sketches through improv with Kevin McDonald (Kids in the Hall)
In this 4-hour intensive workshop, you’ll improvise scenes and Kevin McDonald will lead a discussion on how to build up the comedy, build on the characters and create a story for a brand new sketch. Then we’ll do the scene again, as a more prepared comedy sketch.
In the second half of the class, you’ll do improv again and this time, work on how to make them into sketches. Then you’ll perform for the class and receive notes from Kevin!

One Line Premise: Sketch Comedy Workshop with Kevin McDonald
Each student will bring in a one-line premise for a comedy sketch like "What if a guy was $10 short of being a millionaire."
Kevin McDonald will lead a discussion in breaking down each premise and writing it as a scene.
Following the workshop, you’ll write your sketch at home and turn it in for follow-up feedback from Kevin!

Improv Level 1
Welcome to improv! Here’s where to start.
This class is designed for absolute beginners up to those with some short form or long form improv experience. Each week we will develop your group and individual skills through scene work and exercises.
This course is an introduction to long-form improvisation, based on the style developed by The iO Theater and The Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre. We will start with a focus on the fundamentals - agreement, listening, and support - as well as the thing that should come across in every scene: the FUN! A music improv fanatic, she has been performing with "Baby Wants Candy" and "Shamilton" for years both in Chicago and at the Edinburgh Fringe. Lily completed the Conservatory program at Second City and now understudies for their e.t.c stage, teaches improv at the Annoyance, and performs in Marquee at iO. Her biggest passion project is podcast "Charm Scene," which has headlined multiple comedy festivals around the country. @charmscenepod @lily.ludwig.
Austin Packard (he/him) is a Chicago-based improviser and comedian originally from Cleveland, OH. He performs regularly with "Baby Wants Candy" and "Shamilton" at the Second City and the Edinburgh Fringe, Laura Hall and Lisa McQueen's "Improvised Broadway," "Tuesday Musical Improv" at the Annoyance Theatre," and "Marquee" at iO Theater. Rhyme Time with Charm Scene
Looking to WOW with your music improv skills? We'll dig deep into music improv's most impressive (and difficult) skill- RHYMING. Learn how to think one line ahead, building verses and choruses that rhyme every time, while practicing rhythm and confidence. Rising 5th to 8th graders are invited to join us for week-long camps full of fun games as they learn the fundamentals of improv. No experience needed!
Improv has been shown increase confidence, build teamwork, reduce anxiety, and it’s a whole lot of FUN!
Campers will learn and practice fundamental skills of improv, including:
Short form and long form basics
Creative thinking, building characters, self-expression, and storytelling
Teamwork, problem-solving, & public speaking
Listening & contributing thoughtfully ("yes, and")
Accepting differences and interacting with others without judgement

We take the audience's problems and put them on trial.

Each week will have an exercise focused on a specific skill, followed by sets of scenes with notes from artistic director Michael Busch (or occasionally other instructors).
